Sleep Deprivation

October 25, 2010

It seems like everyone of my friends is exhausted. There is just so much to do! We are running through the semester faster than ever. In addition to a heavy work load our schedules are packed with committee meetings, internships, pledge meetings and classwork. Plus finding time for a part time job. Sometimes when I get home I feel like I need time to catch my breath…

Fun things I did this weekend instead of sleeping: relax w friends I hadn’t seen on a while, volunteer at Green Festival, drive through a different part of MD on my way to work and saw the leaves changing to their autumn shades…. It is a beautiful time of the year:)

I will have to bike to the arboretum sometime this week if I can escape the Homecoming craziness!

Living Off Campus

October 14, 2010

Sadly (and thankfully), I have never lived in the Gallaudet dorms.

My first and only dorm room was Moorhead, MN… During my NSO week, at about 7am a freshman walked into my room and pissed all over the floor (wrong room, wrong floor, and waaasteddd). I was not a fan of on campus living.

Living on campus at Gallaudet has always been a little tempting, but for me financially it isn’t a feasible option. I do feel like I miss out on constant socialization, easy access to classes and food, and weekend gatherings…

BUT off campus I have my own kitchen, room, and laundry machine. I have lived with other Gallaudet students or alumni, and I see my friends all the time. My off campus life has branched into a DC life. I feel like part of a larger community here, and I am comfortable with my surroundings.

Many people say the neighborhood surrounding Gallaudet is a little sketchy- which is partially true. I have heard and seen gun shot wounds, and had the police in my house or banging on my door. Fortunately,  the scary stuff doesn’t happen much until you are walking alone or late at night… and thankfully never to me. *knock knock on wood*

As always, it is important to be very aware of your surroundings, but I like to think DC has taught me a little street smarts. Say “Hi” to the locals and you can become one. 🙂

Quick update before midterms…

October 11, 2010

Back at the craziness that is Gallaudet, in full swing… Mid terms this week.  Swimming has been balancing me out as far as stress. With out a few laps I feel like I am spending too much time with gravity. . .

Time to call Mom. I miss my family so much, but I couldn’t imagine how different I would be if I missed out on this experience because I wanted to stay home. I am happy I can have the opportunity to live somewhere out of my norm.

I showed a childhood friend around DC this weekend. All the obligatory tourist pictures accomplished 🙂 Pictures to come soon.

Time to dive back in the homework. ^_^ (sarcasm)

October 8, 2010

I haven’t updated in a while! I don’t really have a lot to say because my life surprisingly has been very stable. I have been falling a little behind my schoolwork because it has been one of those “blah” weeks; however, it’s not good because midterms will come up very soon, and I can’t continually ignore my homework. I got a lot of opportunities this month; I went to two job fairs and got very positive responses. The Spanish department is offering a Spain study aboard sign language program next summer, and I really want to go. Luckily I will have a large refund check from Gallaudet, so I am going to use it for the Spain study abroad sign language program. I really really really want to go to Spain for the summer…Especially spending my 22nd birthday in Spain!

I have decided to go ahead and minor in psychology because it is relevant to my future career.
