Go Bison!

by

Soccer. That one word sums up half of my semester. I am loving this opportunity to play college ball, but it takes time and commitment to be on a team. I never thought I would have the opportunity to play after my junior year of high school. Truthfully, I was pushing the limits, trying to play soccer on recreational teams all throughout my high school years–period.

During my freshman year of high school, my team dispersed, not only because a few of the girls had unsportsmanlike behavior, but also because our coach was banned from leading a team, which he did anyways without letting us know. For my sophomore year, I helped coach my sister’s team, but I did not play. Then, I played on her team the following year (we are only 18 months apart in age). My senior year of high school soccer constituted of kicking a ball around a football field with 6-14 year olds.

After that haphazard experience with soccer, I knew I would never play again, especially on a college team like my dad did years ago.

All I can say is, “never say never.”

I joined Gallaudet’s Women’s Soccer team last semester and began the process of getting back into shape and re-learning how to kick a ball. We had a four-day pre-season soccer camp before school started and have had one-a-day practices with the occasional day off ever since. In addition, we have had games almost every other day. If I were not having so much fun, I would say that this is crazy!

At any rate, we have had seven games thus far. We have lost all of them. But I will say that we have had a couple of great games and we have already made as many goals as the team did altogether last year. Go Bison!

Our best game was against Columbia Union College where we not only had the closest score of the season (5-2), but we also played as a team. It was an amazing game! We will play them again later this semester (Oct 10), and I am looking forward to it.

Only six more weeks and eleven games of soccer left before my first and last season to play college soccer is over. Although this is my first time to play college sports, I will be ineligible to play after this year because I will be a second-year senior. As disappointed as I am about that, I am eternally grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play college sports, share a common experience with my dad, and make new friends.
