That one word sums up everything that’s happened since I’ve arrived on campus.
The flight here was an adventure, after getting off the plane in Montreal me and my family took a wrong turn in the airport (Which, we were only following the directions given to us before boarding…) Then caught the Plane from Montreal to Washington shortly before it was due to leave. I think long stopovers might be better for me, as I get lost fairly easily (as I’ve come to realize this more and more now!)
I arrived on the 16th, not knowing where to go at all, but was pointed in the right directions by different Residence Life workers in my building. After getting straightened away a little, me and my family went to the Union Station, and found our way to target. There are no trains of the such in Newfoundland Canada, so that was pretty cool!
After awhile of settling in, it was time to go on the Honors Retreat. Pretty amazing to be able to get to know people so… ‘personally’, before classes even start, it was really enjoyable. While I was gone, my parents got things for my room for me (I still can’t imagine taking a fridge on the trains!) then we went to Baltimore, shopped a bit, went to 6 flags the next morning.
I missed most of NSO, due to getting things for my room/getting ready for classes. I felt bad for missing the opportunity to make friends but after going to eat at the café a few times, I started meeting more and more people anyhow. Everyone I’ve met are pretty cool! =]
I have to admit, for awhile, i felt like I wasn’t Deaf enough. Or hearing enough. But, that stage passed. While I could still say I don’t feel Deaf enough, I’ve stopped caring. There are many ways to be Deaf, and if I don’t fit in someway, there’ll be other ways. Diversity makes everyone unique, and it’s better than everyone being the same anyhow.
I’m outside now, watching football practice. They have a game on Saturday, go Bison!
I’m in the process of starting a club. There’s no name for it yet, and a petition has to be signed. The basic idea is to help Africa (In a way to be decided by all members once meetings are underway.) Africans need to solve their own problems, but it doesn’t mean we can lend a helping hand, which is what I’d like to do. If anyone’s interested, my email is nicole.marsh@gallaudet.edu
Antyways, this is starting to go all over the place, I’ll write again later!
Nicole
Ps: I miss you Duncan.
