First month at Gallaudet

September 23, 2009

Wow! Time sure does fly so fast! Tomorrow will mark one month since I came here to Gallaudet! I have seen and did a lot of things! From the announcements of the final four for the tenth president of Gallaudet University to a “mini fire” at the I. King Jordan Student Academic Center! One thing that I picked up within the first week here at Gallaudet, is that there is no DULL day at Gallaudet and that Tennis Shoes is a MUST! No rest for weary foot! I found myself in five organizations! I am particularly proud of the Buff and Blue, because the Buff and Blue opened up many doors for me! I am an alternate senator for the Buff and Blue. I attended the Student Congress, (Student Congress is pretty much the same as the actual U.S. Congress only except we don’t have Joe Wilson). I will be attending the Kappa Sigma Rush this thursday and I am determined to join the Kappa Sigma this Spring. I also will be attending the National Book Festival. (Watch for live blog feed directly form my phone while the National Book Festival.) i hope to get my camera by then so I can post pictures of the Festival!

Will write about the courses in the next blog!

Top ten Lessons to be learned

September 22, 2009

It’s 5:06 am as I write this blog, have just finished a large amount of homework! I am going to write about what I have learned thus far at Gallaudet and I am going to pay homage ot my all time favorite late night buddy, David Letterman by presenting the Top Ten Lessons a Freshmen should learn within the first month!

Here they are!

10. Do not Underestimate the homework you are assigned

9. Dont count on having five or more consecutive hours of sleep

8. Foods are not exactly homemade (Want homemade foods? Go to Boli’s!)

7.  Do not ever rely on your alarm clock, have at least three backups in place should old faithful fails you.

6.  Life as a college student is not a piece of cherry pie

5.  Quesiton everything especially what the older students supposedly tell you (Especially the Coffin Door Legend)

4. Free time=Snooze time  (After each homework is completely done!)

3.  24 hours study marathons, a no-no (Unless you want to end up looking like Frankenstein)

2.  Toss that book of excuses that you used in high school to sneak your way out of homework, its useless here..

1. Expect the unexpected

One month into the Gallaudet experience, and I still love it! I will talk about the Buff and Blue, student newspaper soon but I want to talk about the Diversity here at Gallaudet!

Time is of Essence!

September 19, 2009

As a College Student, I have to face the WORST thing ever invented in the history of  the human race: Homework, YES, HOMEWORK (ok,ok.. It’s not the WORST thing ever invented in the history of  the human race) but I have to face it like a picky five years old child faces the ever loathed Spinach or Brussel Spouts. It is not so bad if you know how to MANAGE your TIME! Time Management is a critical skill that a College Freshman needs to have! (I can see a chorus of I-TOLD-YOU-SO!) As a high school student, my time management skills were extremely poor, so the first three weeks of College was a RUDE awakening, heed this advice from a  former procasinator: DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO DO THAT ASSIGNMENT THAT WAS ASSIGNED 4 DAYS PRIOR! More tips coming up soon!

A glimpse of College Life

September 19, 2009

Is that you peering through one of the grand windows of Chapel Hall? Yes? Want a glimpse of what it’s like to be a Gallaudet Freshman? yes? Great! You have come to the right place! As a current freshman at Gallaudet, I discovered and took advantage of countless of opportunities here! To me, the best part of Gallaudet is not really the excellent academic standards but rather the wide array of student organizations! I am already involved in several organizations with a specialized focus on Media and Communications, the organization that I most enjoy working for is the Buff and Blue, the student newspaper! The Buff and Blue will be the subject of the next blog soon to follow!  I am a writer for the Buff and Blue, I work with two awesome editors, Mark Ramirez and Alexander Abenchuchan, if you visit and bump in them, be sure to tell them hello! Through the Buff and Blue, I became involved in yet another organization, Student Body Government (SBG). The SBG pretty much functions like our government. More Details will follow the Buff and Blue post.  I will occasionally post a blog spotlighting a specific organization!

Dreaming BIG at Gallaudet

September 6, 2009

“Once upon a Dream”, does this quote seem familiar to you? I am sure that you recognize this quote from several Disney films from the childhood years long gone by! Some people believe that Dreams were made to not come true! I disagree with the notion (idea) because I believe that Dreams can come true if you do three things, Work hard, Focus hard, believe in it!  I have a proof that those three actions can make dreams come true!

Famous people did dream about changing the world, but did not just sit and dream, they captialized on each opportunity to make their dreams happen! One incredible example is Dr. Mason Cogswell and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. Those two men dreamt and envisioned Deaf children being educated, they debated at length, but did they just  sit and talk about their dreams? NO! Dr. Cogswell and Gallaudet worked feverishly to fundraise for Gallaudet’s historic voyage to Europe where he would meet Laurent Clerc and eventually found the first school for the Deaf, where he met his wife, then later had a son who envisioned a  college for the Deaf. If it was not for Dreams, Gallaudet University would not exist!

We the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and the Hearing owe it to Gallaudet to DREAM BIG. Gallaudet offers the world millions and millions of possibilities to dream up! With 47 majors and  self directed majors, there are opportunities to take advantage of at Gallaudet! Gallaudet is your passport to your Dreams!

GET IN.. STAND OUT… AND DREAM BIG at GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY, the world’s ONLY liberal Arts university for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing!

A Bison begins his Odyssey

August 28, 2009

This article is dedicated to Dr. Jane Norman, who inspired me to think positively!  Your advices are peppered throughout my article because they ring true.

As I am writing this,  It is surreal to believe  that I, a Bison will begin my odyssey.  Why is it so surreal?  This was once a dream that was dreamt countless of times…  Every day I dreamt of going to Gallaudet University since I was seven. I knew, deep inside that, I truly belonged at Gallaudet University.  Why did I choose Gallaudet?  I chose Gallaudet because my heart told me that Gallaudet is the right place to be.

The horizon is rapidly approaching; the sun is setting on my carefree youthful years where I made mistakes with the security of a safety net underneath me, waiting to catch me should I fall.  The time when I embark on an odyssey is rapidly advancing upon me.  Why did I choose to use the term Odyssey to describe my forthcoming experiences at Gallaudet University?  I am sure that most of you, when you come across the term Odyssey, Homer comes to the mind. Of course, the term Odyssey is synonymous with Homer. Why would I compare my forthcoming experiences to something of great magnitude?  Changes, Odysseys are usually journeys filled with metamorphic changes that define the trekkers that undergo the odyssey.  Let us use the widely known example of metamorphic changes, the caterpillar and the butterfly. College freshman are caterpillars, when they start college, they prepare to crystallize in a cocoon, which is the college, and when they finally graduate, they break out of the cocoons and emerge as beautiful butterflies!  Some trekkers embark on their odysseys either with confidence, and some people, like me, do have some concerns and worries as they embark on their odysseys, that is normal and of course, the concerns and worries that we bring with us as we embark on odysseys will be always resolved at some point down the path.

Filled with questions and worries as I prepare to embark on an odyssey that will forever alter my life.  Should I major in Deaf Studies? What does Gallaudet have in store for me? As the storm of endless inquires rages on in my mind, I take out an “Umbrella” of confidence to shelter me from pelting questions.  Before I walk on the famed Kendall Green, I will turn to face the southwest where my former alma mater, Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind in Staunton, Virginia lies among the eloquent royal blue mountains and bid it farewell and smile.  Dr. Jane Norman equipped me with the “briefcase” of Life filled with the “positive ladder”. You might be pondering, “What is he talking about?” Dr. Jane Norman, Professor of Communication Studies here at Gallaudet University and a 1957 graduate of VSD, spoke at my commencement this past June.  In her speech, she ‘gave” me and my fellow classmates the items named above.  I will now explain the wonderful purpose of each of those “tools”.

First item is the “briefcase” of Life, Briefcases, often used to carry a wide array of items such as writing instruments such as fountain pens, pencils, and important documents that enables us to succeed in everyday tasks. However, the “briefcase” of Life, is an abstract briefcase that carries a wide array of items uncommonly carried in real briefcases, such as; Experience gained, Lessons learned, and challenges that we overcame.  Inside the briefcase, is one tool, the “positive ladder”. The “positive ladder”, in my opinion, the most wonderful tool that humankind ever laid hands on, because ladders commonly used to help us humans reach heights that would be not possible because of the maximum heights of our jumps.   The “positive ladder” has a similar role to its’ concrete counterparts, but one things sets it apart from the others. Most ladders have a limit as to how high it may reach, but the ladder I am talking about is infinite, it has no limits to how high it may extend.  The ladders are made up of positives that occur around us and help us to climb to success. One thing “positive ladder” has in common with the concrete ladders used on daily basis in the real world, is that they help us reach the objects out of our reach. The “positive ladder” does almost the same but instead of reaching for everyday objects, they help us reach yet attained goals, dreams or successes.   The basic anatomy of the ladder is that the rungs are negatives and the sides are the line that crosses the negatives to make them positives.  A basic picture will help you get the gist of what I am talking about.

Do you see the “ladder”? If you still do not, draw on a paper the positives but this time, make sure the ends touch each other. See it? Great! Bear in mind, in order for us to climb the “positive ladder”, we must think positively in order to move up both on the ladder and in life.  Remember if you just happen to think negatively, which happens to the best of us; think of two positive statements for each negative thought that floats through your head.  That is the only way you can use the “positive ladder”!

My briefcase still has loads of space for me to put in experience and souvenirs from my odyssey at Gallaudet.  I certainly hope by this time in three years, my briefcase will be nearly full due to the overwhelming experiences and lessons learned both the good and the bad.  Fellow Bisons, especially those who are just embarking on their odysseys, I hope it will be an enriching experience for you.

With the “briefcase” clutched in my hand, prepared to begin my odyssey, I turn to face Gallaudet University and greet it with an open mind and heart.  I sincerely hope that you; the readers will join me on this splendid odyssey.  Until next time, open your eyes and heart as it guides you through your odyssey.

Godspeed!!!!
